You can also use neodymium magnets for keep the head in place. The solenoids can act as a guide for the head to precisely position and lock it in place. It will be much much lighter than any other solution.

It will be also very easy to program. Just on/off gcode to initiate the solenoids.

A cool video i've not seen before with fast tool changes.
Considering mounting direction on the tool holders is paramount. the head-on orientation does not seem as repeatable at high speeds as these side-loaders.

I was thinking something like this, smal light weight, can probably be adapted to the e3d TC with not to much work. We only nead 1/4 turn to clamp the e3d TC, so could be fast as well depending on gearing. Probobly need a switch for detecting locked and open position.

In the end I think a Maxwell Coupling is the way to go.
E3D had good reasons to do so. Any shock or vibration: The Design ensures that it will fall back in its intended location/orientation.

I like Joshua Vasquez design for beeing maybe the lightest option out there.
The HevORT provides great potential to go fast in printing. Adding too much weight E3D-style takes one of the major benefits of the HevORT design away.
The remote option is just a wonderful concept and seems to work great:

However, @Eirikhe: Great Idea! Adding a 20g motor to remove the drag of the cables of the remote system.... that sounds like a winning trade.

What about a combination? Maxwell coupling + a solenoid with spring (in closed position)? Should be fast and light, and the solenoid is only needed to open the lock.
