Exchangeable print head

Post by teeminus »

Hi!

I have seen some discussions going on about how to implement a tool changing system. While I think the HevORT is a really great printer which is well thought out, one thing that I miss is the option to change the print head. The HEVO I had before did have a manual print head exchange system which was based on locating pins and long M3 screw which fixes the print head to the X carrier. I liked that system because I could easily swap hotends (or as I initially planned to swap in a DC motor to convert the printer to a CNC mill) by unscrewing one screw.

What do you guys think about that?

Best,
Christian

Something like this with somekind of connector on toolhead and the base also works too. The XChange do nothing new to me.

The XChange looks pretty good. At first I was like "thats pretty expensive" but now I think about buying one of these :D

I just came across the WhamBam Mutant: https://whambam3d.com/collections/mutant?aff=44
There also is a review of that system from Thomas Sanladerer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1WVxJEd73E

The WhamBam Mutant costs like half of the XChange, but it's made of plastic. And for that I thinks its pretty expensive.

Yeah I also watched Thomas Sanladerer's video on the WhamBam Mutant. It seems like a pretty cheap(ly made) alternative to the XChange. The electrical connectors are probably the biggest compromise for the Mutant. Thomas made note that you should not use AC due to the exposed connectors and the potential of arcing. As the tolerances of the plastic parts leaves something to be desired.

Full disclosure I backed the XChange. I paid $150 for, 1x Master Plate, and 3x Tool Mounts. Compared to the Mutant Quad Kit for $149 I don't know why anyone would buy the WhamBam Mutant. I guess you could get the base kit but that just makes a serviceable tool head which thingiverse has plenty of options for far less. The XChange also plans to have a PID-controlled docking station planned for the future, which will be a backwards-compatible add-on. That was the biggest reason why I backed the project.

At the end of the day both products are patent pending closed systems, so yeah that sucks...

I am not quite sure if I want to have AC near the print head moving at high speeds... I tried to back the XChange as well but unfortunatelly I don't own a credit card :(

I backed the X-Change on Kickstarter with delivery in March/April - I'm still waiting.
