Does nema23 servo motors require external drivers?

I will be building a large printer, i have a heatbed lying around at 500x500 mm, and as such i will create the fastest possible x/y rig with nema23 servo motors - but can i connect them directly to Duet2 or do I have to use external drivers as shown in this picture: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=htt ...
